Transit and Commuter Rail
A Resolution on Transit and Commuter Rail
WHEREAS, the population of the metro Atlanta region has grown by approximately
one million over the last decade and, by 2030, the region is forecasted to gain
an additional 2.3 million residents; and
WHEREAS, the growth of the region’s population and employment will generate
increased pressures on our transportation system; and
WHEREAS, residents of the region consistently rank traffic congestion as one of
their top concerns; and
WHEREAS, improving mobility and reducing traffic congestion is essential to the
continued economic growth of the region and a better quality of life for
citizens; and
WHEREAS, many residents have limited transit options and there are few
significant near-term system improvements ready for implementation; and
WHEREAS, the expansion of transit services, including the establishment of a
viable commuter rail system, would enhance the ability to move people in an
efficient manner by creating connectivity between population and employment
centers within the region and beyond; and
WHEREAS, such connectivity would also have a positive impact on land use,
consistent with the metro area’s Regional Development Plan.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association
encourages the accelerated development and implementation of appropriate
alternative modes of transportation, including the expansion of transit and
commuter rail services.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association urges the State
of Georgia to play a supportive and proactive role in working with local
officials and other partners to develop the resources to accomplish this
objective.
