A Resolution Calling for Streamlining of Urban Transportation
Project Review and Approval
WHEREAS, transportation improvements in urban areas often encompass site
characteristics or design necessities that are inconsistent with general
standards and require discretionary review by Georgia Department of
Transportation (GDOT); and
WHEREAS, frequently, staff assigned by the state to review such proposals change
over the course of an approval process, or are sometimes unaccustomed to
exercising their discretionary authority to address such challenges; and
WHEREAS, metro Atlanta is divided among five GDOT districts, and some districts
are less familiar with urban design solutions than others, resulting in the
inconsistent application of discretionary authority and increased time for
review;
NOW BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association, encourages
GDOT to consider unifying the Atlanta district or cross-train transportation
officials in addressing urban transportation issues in a consistent way with
flexibility as appropriate. Permitting requirements should be streamlined and
time constrained to insure more timely decision-making.
